This Saturday, the Des Moines cycling community will gather for a memorial ride honoring Alex Pretti — a Minneapolis cyclist, community member, and a kind, caring soul whose life was unjustly taken during a federal immigration enforcement operation.
Alex was one of us. He could have been any of us. As we mourn his loss, we come together in unity to remember him and to stand in solidarity with the many lives impacted by the actions of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
This ride is being held in coordination with memorial rides happening nationwide, including one hosted by Angry Catfish in Minneapolis.
Ride Details:
📍 Start: Union Park, at the Heritage Carousel
🚴 Route: Union Park → Iowa State Capitol → Union Park
📏 Distance: ~7 miles round trip
🕐 Time: Saturday, January 31 • 1:00 PM CST
This will be a casual, inclusive pace. All riders are welcome. Bring a bike, helmet, warm layers, water/snacks, and anything you’d like to carry in remembrance of Alex.
This memorial is open to everyone in the community, not only those who ride bikes. Participants are encouraged to join in whatever way feels accessible and meaningful — by walking, standing, rolling, skating, scootering, using mobility aids, or simply being present.
This gathering is about collective remembrance, solidarity, and community care. Whether you ride, walk, sit, or observe, your presence matters.
This isn’t just for people on bikes. It’s for everyone.
We are many, but we stand together as one.
